Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Being in charge of Keeping the Spear of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)

The King of Abyssinia (Najaashi (rahimahullah)) once sent three spears to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) as a gift. After receiving the three spears, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) gave one spear to Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), he gave the second spear to Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and he kept the third spear for himself.

On the occasion of the two Eids, Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) would carry the spear of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and walk in front of him. He would walk in front of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) while holding the spear out of honour and respect for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) would reach the Eidgaah, Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) would insert the spear in the ground so that it may serve as a sutrah for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) during the Eid salaah.

After Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) left this world and Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) became the khalifah, Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) would conduct in the same way with Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) on the occasion of the two Eids. (Siyar A‘laam Nubalaa’ 3/221)
