The Third Meeting of the Quraish with Abu Taalib – The Seerah of Rasullullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) – Part Forty

When the Quraish noticed that Abu Taalib was determined to assist and protect Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), they consulted each other for a third time.

They then came to Abu Taalib and said, “Umaarah bin Waleed is an extremely handsome, intelligent and understanding youngster of the Quraish. Take him and hand your nephew to us who is responsible for causing disunity among the people. We intend to kill him and save the people from this calamity.”

Abu Taalib replied, “What! How can it ever be possible for me to give you that child which I raised myself and allow you to kill him while I take your child in his place to raise and care for? By Allah! This can never happen!”

Mut‘im bin ‘Adiyy remarked, “O Abu Taalib! Your people have presented you with a fair and just suggestion and an excellent solution to rid themselves of this calamity. However, you did not accept their offer.” Abu Taalib retorted, “By Allah! My people have not been fair to me! You can do whatever you want!” (Bidaayah wan Nihaayah 3/46)

It is mentioned that after Abu Taalib promised to continue protecting Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), regardless of the opposition of the Quraish, he recited the following couplets in which he expressed his support for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam):

والله لن يصلوا إليك بجمعهم     حتى أوسد في التراب دفينا

I swear by Allah Ta‘ala even all together – they will never be able to reach you (and harm you), until the time when I am made to lie in the ground and buried.

Continue to carry out your mission, for there is no disgrace or problem in what you are doing. Rejoice, and may your eyes be cooled (i.e. may you be comforted through this news that I will never forsake you).

You have invited me to Islam, and I know that you are my well-wisher (who hopes the best for me), for you always speak the truth and you have always been most trustworthy.

You have presented before me such a deen which I recognize to be the best deen in the world.

If it were not for my fear and apprehension of my people rebuking me and swearing me, you would have found me wholeheartedly and openly embracing Islam!
