A few days after her demise, Hazrat Khawlah bint Hakeem (radhiyallahu \u2018anha), the wife of the cousin of Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), Hazrat Uthmaan bin Maz\u2019oon (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu), came to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam).<\/p>\n<p>The laws of purdah had not yet been revealed from Allah Ta\u2018ala. Hence, being part of the family of Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), she came to him and said, \u201cO Rasul of Allah! I see you overcome with grief due to the absence of Khadijah!\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) replied, \u201cYes! She was the one who took care of all my children and saw to the running of my home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Khawlah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) asked, \u201cShould I not send a marriage proposal on your behalf to a woman?\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) agreed and asked her, \u201cTo which woman do you intend sending a marriage proposal on my behalf?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Khawlah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) replied, \u201cThere is a woman who was not previously married, and there is a woman who is a widow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) asked, \u201cWho is the one who was not married previously?\u201d Hazrat Khawlah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) replied, \u201cAaishah, the daughter of your most dear and close friend, Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) then asked, \u201cWho is the widow?\u201d Hazrat Khawlah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) said, \u201cSaudah bint Zam\u2019ah. She brought imaan in you and follows you.\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cSend a proposal to both women on my behalf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marriage to Hazrat Saudah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Khawlah (radhiyallahu \u2018anh) went to Hazrat Saudah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) and said to her, \u201cI have brought good news and barakah from the side of Allah Ta\u2018ala for you and your family!\u201d Hazrat Saudah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) asked, \u201cWhat are you referring to?\u201d Hazrat Khawlah replied, \u201cRasulullah (sallallau \u2018alaihi wasallam) sent a marriage for you.\u201d She replied, \u201cI am pleased to accept the proposal, however you should take permission from my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The father of Hazrat Saudah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) was advanced in age at that time and had not embraced Islam. Upon mentioning the proposal to him, he was greatly pleased and said regarding Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), \u201cHe is a person of nobility and suitable to marry my daughter. Accordingly, Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) married Hazrat Saudah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) for the mahr of 400 dirhams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marriage to Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Khaulah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) then went to Hazrat Aaishah\u2019s (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) mother, Hazrat Ummu Roomaan (radhiyallahu \u2018anha), and said to her \u201cO Ummu Roomaan! I have brought good news and barakah from the side of Allah Ta\u2018ala for you and your family!\u201d Hazrat Ummu Roomaan (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) asked, \u201cWhat are you referring to?\u201d Hazrat Khawlah replied, \u201cRasulullah (sallallau \u2018alaihi wasallam) sent me to propose for Aaishah in marriage.\u201d She replied, \u201cI will have to wait for my husband, Abu Bakr, to come and then I will inform him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) arrived and was informed of the proposal, he said, \u201cHow can she marry him, whereas he is so close to me like my brother, and she is like a niece to him?\u201d Hazrat Khawlah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) thus came to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) and mentioned what Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) had said. Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) responded, \u201cGo and tell him that I said, \u2018I am your brother, and you are my brother in Islam (i.e. we are not blood-brothers), and your daughter is permissible for me to marry.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hearing this, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) was greatly pleased, however he was concerned that he had already accepted a proposal from Mut\u2019im bin Adiyy on behalf of his son, Jubayr. Thus, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) said to Hazrat Khawlah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha), \u201cMut\u2019im bin Adiyy had sent a proposal for his son Jubayr which I have already accepted.\u201d Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) was a persn who never went back on his promise.<\/p>\n<p>On saying this, he immediately went to the house of Mut\u2018im and asked him, \u201cWhat have you decided about the marriage?\u201d Mut\u2019im\u2019s wife was also present. He therefore addressed her and asked, \u201cWhat is your opinion in this regard?\u201d She replied, \u201cIf my son were to marry your daughter, I have this strong feeling that he will abandon his religion, give up the religion of his forefathers and embrace your religion.\u201d Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) turned to Mut\u2019im and asked him, \u201cWhat do you have to say?\u201d He replied, \u201cYou have already heard what my wife has to say.\u201d The tone in which Mut\u2019im and his wife spoke to Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) was a clear indication that they were no longer interested and they declined getting their son married to Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha).<\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu &#8216;anhu) thus returned home and said to Hazrat Khawlah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha), \u201cI accept the proposal of Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam). He may come and marry my daughter.\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) thus came to the home of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu), and the nikaah was performed for the mahr of 400 dirhams.<\/p>\n<p>The nikaahs of Hazrat Saudah and Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhmaa) both took place in the month of Shawwaal in the 10th year after nubuwwah. Since the nikaahs of Hazrat Saudah and Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) took place very close to each other, there is a difference among the Ulama and historians as to which nikaah took place first.
