Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) \u2013 the personality whose pure name is a means of honour for the Muslims, and whose imaani zeal and fervour was such that even to this day, after 1300 years, the disbelievers still fear him \u2013 was famous for persecuting the Muslims before embracing Islam. He also continued to look for opportunities to assassinate Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam).<\/p>\n

One day, the Quraish held a meeting in which they (called for a volunteer and) said, \u201cIs there anyone here who will kill Muhammed (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam)?\u201d Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) volunteered saying, \u201cI will carry out this task.\u201d At this, the people exclaimed, \u201cSurely, you are the person who can do it, O Umar!\u201d<\/p>\n

With his sword hanging around his neck, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) set out to fulfil this sinister task. However, on the way, he met Hazrat Sa\u2019d bin Abi Waqqaas (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) of the Zuhrah clan (according to some reporters, he met another Sahaabi, not Hazrat Sa\u2019d [radhiyallahu \u2018anhu]).<\/p>\n

On meeting Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu), Hazrat Sa\u2019d (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) asked him, \u201cO Umar, where are you going?\u201d Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) replied, \u201cI am going to kill Muhammed (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam \u2013 may Allah forbid!).\u201d<\/p>\n

Hazrat Sa\u2019d (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) then said, \u201cDon\u2019t you see that Banu Haashim, Banu Zuhrah and Banu Abde Munaf clans will kill you in revenge?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hearing this response, Hazrat Umar became upset and said, \u201cIt seems that you also have renounced the religion of your forefathers (and become a Muslim)! Let me kill you first!\u201d<\/p>\n

Saying this, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) drew out his sword. Hazrat Sa\u2019d (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) declared, \u201cYes, I have become a Muslim!\u201d, and saying this, he also drew out his sword. They were about to commence fighting when Hazrat Sa\u2019d (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) said, \u201cYou should first set your own house in order. Your sister and brother-in-law have both accepted Islam.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hearing this, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) became extremely angry and immediately went straight to his sister\u2019s house. The door of the house was locked from inside, and both husband and wife were learning the Qur\u2019aan from Hazrat Khabbaab (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu)<\/p>\n

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) knocked at the door and shouted for his sister to open it. Hearing the voice of Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu), Hazrat Khabbaab (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) hid himself in some inner portion of the home, and in his haste, he forgot to take the pages of the Qur\u2019aan Majeed with him.<\/p>\n

When his sister opened the door, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) struck her on the head, causing her head to bleed, and then addressed her saying, \u201cO enemy of yourself! Have you also forsaken your religion!?\u201d Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) then went inside and asked, \u201cWhat were you doing, and who was the stranger I heard from outside?\u201d His brother-in-law replied, \u201cWe were talking to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) said to him, \u201cHave you also left your religion and embraced the new religion?\u201d His brother-in-law replied, \u201cBut what if the new religion is the true religion?\u201d Hearing this, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) pulled his brother-in-law by his beard and attacked him, dropping him to the ground and beating him most severely.<\/p>\n

When his sister intervened, trying to save her husband, he slapped her so violently that her face began to bleed. Since she was, after all, Hazrat Umar\u2019s (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) sister, she openly exclaimed, \u201cUmar! We are only being beaten because we have become Muslims! Definitely, we have become Muslims, so now do whatever you want to do with us!\u201d<\/p>\n

Thereafter, Hazrat Umar\u2019s (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) eyes fell on the pages of the Qur\u2019aan Majeed which had been left behind by Hazrat Khabbaab (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu). By this time, Hazrat Umar\u2019s (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) anger had subsided, and he felt a bit ashamed over his sister\u2019s bleeding.<\/p>\n

Seeing the pages of the Qur\u2019aan Majeed, he said, \u201cVery well, show me, what are these pages?\u201d His sister replied, \u201cNo, you are unclean, and no unclean person can touch these pages.\u201d Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) insisted, but his sister was not prepared to allow him to touch the pages unless he made wudhu and ghusl.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) took a bath, and then took the pages and began to recite. The pages had the verses of Surah Taha written upon them, and he commenced reciting from the beginning of the surah. When Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reached the following verse, his entire condition had changed and he was a different man altogether:<\/p>\n

Indeed, I am Allah. There is none worthy of worship besides Me, so worship Me, and establish salaah for My remembrance. (Surah Taha v. 14)<\/em><\/p>\n

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) then said, \u201cAlright, take me to Muhammed (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam).\u201d Hearing this, Hazrat Khabbaab (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) came out from hiding and said, \u201cO Umar! Glad tidings for you! Last night, which was Thursday night, Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) made dua saying, \u2018O Allah! Strengthen Islam with either Umar or Abu Jahl, whomsoever You like (as these two people were renowned for their strength and power).\u2019 It seems that the dua of Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) has been answered in your favour.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) then went to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) and embraced Islam on Friday morning.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Umar\u2019s (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) accepting Islam was a terrible blow to the morale of the disbelievers, but the Muslims were still few in number, and not just the city of Makkah \u2013 but the entire country of Arabia was against them. Hence, the disbelievers intensified their efforts, held meetings and held discussions for the purpose of trying to completely annihilate the Muslims, and adopted different methods to oppose Islam.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, with Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) now on their side, the Muslims started performing their salaah openly in the Haram.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas\u2019ood (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) says, \u201cHazrat Umar\u2019s (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) accepting Islam was a great victory for the Muslims, his emigration to Madinah was a great help for the Muslims, and his becoming the Khalifah was a great blessing for the Muslims.\u201d<\/p>\n
