Returning from Taa’if – The Seerah of Rasullullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) – Part Fifty Four

After Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was driven out of Taa’if and pelted with stones, he came to the orchard of Utbah and Shaibah. Utbah and Shaibah were staunch enemies of Islam. However, on this occasion, seeing the pitiable condition of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), they were overcome by feelings of sympathy.

After Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) entered their orchard, they summoned their slave, Addaas, and said to him, “Place a bunch of grapes on a platter and take it to that man (referring to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)). Request him to partake of the grapes.” When Addaas presented the platter of grapes to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), then he had found that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) recited bismillah and then commenced eating the grapes.

Hearing Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) take the name of Allah Ta‘ala, he exclaimed, “By Allah! No person in this city speaks words such as these!” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked Addaas, “Which city are you from, and what religion do you follow?” Addaas replied, “I come from the city Neenway and I follow the Christian religion.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked, “Are you from the same city of Neenway in which the pious servant of Allah Ta‘ala, Nabi Yunus bin Mattaa (‘alaihis salaam), used to reside?” Addaas was quite surprised and asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), “What do you know of Nabi Yunus bin Mattaa (‘alaihis salaam)?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) responded, “He was my brother, a prophet of Allah Ta‘ala, and I am also a prophet of Allah Ta‘ala.”

Hearing this, Addaas immediately kissed the blessed feet, hands and forehead of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and accepted Islam testifying, “I bear witness that you are the servant and Rasul of Allah Ta‘ala!”

Utbah and Shaibah had been observing the scene, and on seeing Addaas kissing the hands, feet and forehead of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), one of them said to the other, “This man has corrupted your slave!” When Addaas then returned to them, they said to him, “Why did you kiss the hands and feet of that man?” Addaas replied, “My master! There is nothing on the surface of the earth better than this (deen he has brought), and he informed me of such a thing which only a Nabi could have knowledge of!” They retorted saying, “Woe to you, O Addaas! Do not let him turn you away from your religion, as your religion is better than his religion.”

The Jinn of Naseebeen Listening to the Qur’aan Majeed at Nakhlah

On the return journey from Taa’if, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) stopped in a place named Nakhlah which is the distance of one night’s journey from Makkah Mukarramah. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) spent a few days in Nakhlah.

During this period, while Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was engaged in performing salaah, a group of seven jinn from Naseebeen (a city in Shaam) passed by. While passing, they stopped and listened to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) while he was reciting the Qur’aan Majeed. After listening to the recitation of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), they departed. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was totally unaware of the jinn listening to his recitation of the Qur’aan Majeed, until the following verses of the Qur’aan Majeed were revealed:

And (recall) when We directed a group of jinn towards you, listening to the Qur’an. So, when they attended it, they said (to each other), “Keep quiet.” Then once it was over, they went back to their people as warners. They said, “O our people, we have heard a book sent down after Nabi Musa (‘alaihis salaam), confirming what was before it, which guides to the truth and to a straight path. O our people, respond to Allah’s messenger, and believe in him, and (once you do that,) Allah will forgive your sins for you, and will save you from a painful punishment. The one who does not respond to Allah’s messenger is not (able) to cause failure (to Allah) in the land, and for him there are no supporters besides Him. Such people are in open error. (Surah Ahqaaf v. 29-32)

Returning to Makkah Mukarramah

On the return journey from Taa’if, as Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) came close to Makkah Mukarramah, Hazrat Zaid bin Haarithah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) asked him, “How are you going to enter the city of Makkah when you have been taken out by the people?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “O Zaid! Allah Ta‘ala will certainly make a way out for me from this difficulty, and Allah Ta‘ala is the One who will always support His deen and cause His Nabi to triumph over the enemies.”

From this, we see the reliance that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had upon Allah Ta‘ala and the hope of receiving His divine mercy and assistance.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then came to the cave of Hira on the outskirts of Makkah Mukarramah. From the Cave of Hira, he sent a message with Abdullah bin Urayqit to Akhnas bin Shuraiq asking, “Will you grant me amnesty and protection to enter Makkah Mukarramah?” Akhnas responded saying, “I am an ally of the Quraish, hence I cannot grant you amnesty and protection.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) thereafter sent a message to Suhail bin Amr, asking him for amnesty and protection to enter Makkah Mukarramah. Suhail replied, “My clan – the clan of Banu Aamir – cannot grant you amnesty and protection as we will be opposing the clan of Banu Ka’b of the Quraish.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then sent a message to Mut’im bin Adiyy asking, “Will you grant me amnesty and protection to enter Makkah Mukarramah?” Mut’im agreed to grant Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) amnesty and protection. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) thus entered Makkah Mukarramah and spent the night at the home of Mut’im bin Adiyy.

The following morning, Mut’im together with his sons, who were six or seven in number, armed themselves and went to the Haram with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). On entering the Haram, Mut’im announced, “O people of the Quraish! I have granted amnesty and protection to Muhammed, so no one should interfere with him!” Mut’im then told Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) that he could perform tawaaf. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then kissed the Hajar-e-Aswad, and commenced performing tawaaf of the Ka’bah Shareef, while the sons of Mut’im sat on the mataaf area, carrying their swords.

Observing this spectacle, Abu Sufyaan came to Mut’im and asked him, “Have you merely granted him amnesty, or have you followed him in his deen as well?” Mut’im replied, “I have only granted him amnesty. I have not accepted his religion.” Abu Sufyaan responded saying, “In that case, your protection and amnesty will not be violated. We will respect the protection of the one to whom you have given protection.”

On completing his tawaaf, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) performed two rakaats of salaah, and then proceeded to his home with Mut’im and his sons escorting him and protecting him.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) never forgot the kindness which Mut’im bin Adiyy showed him on that occasion, until a few years later, on the occasion of Badr, when Allah Ta‘ala granted Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) clear victory, and many of the kuffaar leaders were killed and their soldiers taken as captives, then upon seeing the kuffaar captives of war, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “If Mut’im bin Adiyy was alive today and he had interceded to me on behalf of these impure people (referring to the disbelieving prisoners, asking me to release them, then out of consideration for him), I would have certainly released all of them.” (Saheeh Bukhaari #3139)
