Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) calling out the Azaan in Shaam

On the occasion when Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) travelled to Baitul Muqaddas during the period of his Khilaafat, he visited Jaabiyah (a place in Shaam). While he was in Jaabiyah, the people approached him and asked him if he would request Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), who was residing in Shaam, to call out the azaan for them, as he was the muazzin of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) in Madinah Munawwarah.

Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) requested Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to call out the azaan and he immediately agreed.

As soon as Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) began to call out the azaan, the people were reminded of the mubaarak era of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) when Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) would call out the Azaan in Madinah Munawwarah.  This caused them to weep out of sadness and grief over the separation of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) from the world.

Describing the extent of the people’s sadness and grief, Hazrat Aslam (rahimahullah), the freed slave of Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), said, “I never saw people cry on any day more than I had seen them cry on that day.” (Siyar A‘laamin Nubalaa 3/222, Sharhuz Zarqaani 5/71)
