Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)’s Deep Love and Memories of Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)

One night, during the period of his khilaafah, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), was on his security patrol when he saw a light and heard a sound coming from a certain home. He found an old lady in it spinning wool and singing the following couplets:

عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَاةُ الْأَبْرَارْ ** صَلَّى عَلَيْكَ الْمُصْطَفَوْنَ الْأَخْيَارْ

“May the pious continue to send salutations upon Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! May the best and most select of Allah Ta‘ala’s servants recite durood upon you (O Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam))!

قَدْ كُنْتَ قَوَّامًا بَكِيَّ الْأَسْحَارْ

“O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), you stood in worship each night, and you wept (in dua for the ummah) before the dawning of each day.

يَا لَيْتَ شِعْرِي وَالْمَنَايَا أَطْوَارْ ** هَلْ تَجْمَعُنِي وَحَبِيبِي الدَّار

“If only I knew whether I will be united with my beloved (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in the Hereafter, for death comes in different states, and I do not know how I shall die.”

On hearing these couplets, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) sat down, weeping in love and memory of Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). (Az-Zuhd War Raqaaiq Libnil Mubaarak #1024)
